The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Selection in English Ashes Team
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
