The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
